20,000K Deep Blue Star NEUCO Metal Halide Lamps from CoralVue

Posted on Wednesday, April 6th, 2011 at 10:36 am

CoralVue will soon be stocking the new NEUCO Deep Blue Star 20K metal halide lamps. These metal halide bulbs produce a color and crispness that rivals that of the ever popular Radium 20K bulbs. NEUCO designed the Deep Blue Star to provide continuous, quality, blue spectrum. Many hobbyists turn to a 20K bulb to bring out brilliant florescent colors  from their corals, while still providing substantial PAR.

The German-manufactured Deep Blue Star 20,000K bulb will be available in both Double Ended (DE) and Single Ended 250W versions. A 400W SE version will also be available. These bulbs were developed to fire on any electronic ballast. Although they will work with magnetic ballasts, the color temperatures may vary. For consistency and expected performance, it is recommended that electronic ballasts are used. Additionally, electronic ballasts will ensure optimal color and life.

Coral Glue from EcoTech Marine

Posted on Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 at 1:08 pm

From the company that brought us the famous line of VorTech propeller pumps, comes a new Coral Glue. Designed to work with both for gluing frags and aquascaping, Coral Glue from EcoTech Marine offers a superior inter-molecular bonding that is easy to apply. Said to set in 10 seconds and cure in 5 minutes, the pH neutral glue has a gel-like consistency and is triple distilled for purity. An interesting claim is the “non-gloggin pin cap”, which any current superglue user should be interested in.

Prism AC by Unique LED Lighting – First Look

Posted on Monday, April 4th, 2011 at 11:10 am

We are very excited to provide you with a first look at the Prism AC LED Fixture by Unique LED Lighting. The Prism AC is a fan-less fixture, which features 18 Cree XP-E LEDs, 9 Cool White and 9 Royal Blue. The Prism AC has dual-dimmable controls, allowing us to control the intensity of each color spectrum. This extra level of control can achieve colors from 460nm to 8500 K.

LED Lighting did a good job packing the light, each element is individually wrapped, for ultimate protection. Our first impression is that this fixture is very solid. The dimming control knobs feel sturdy, and the power cord wiring is well done. Each color channel is clearly marked and setup is quite simple. Installing the hanging kit was very easy, just slide the acrylic pieces into place, and tighten the screw. We will be adding this fixture over one of our tanks shortly, and will post an update.

Here are some photos that showcase the Prism AC.

EcoCham Super Absorbent Cleaning Cloth by EcoXotic

Posted on Sunday, April 3rd, 2011 at 3:14 pm

We’re kidding with the photo of course, but the EcoCham by EcoXoic is a super absorbent cleaning towel, designed to help do that fun cleanup job. We often are not exactly eco-friendly when it comes to cleaning or tidying up our aquariums. It’s just so easy to reach for that paper towel roll, soak up the mess or clean the glass, and never give it a second thought. Well the folks over at EcoXotic have thought of a better way.

The idea is to no longer use paper towels or chemical cleaners about your aquarium. Just pop out your EcoCham get to work, and then just rinse and store away moist in the provided protective case. The EcoCham will help you clean and polish aquarium glass, remove salt residue, remove streaks, smudges and figerprints (STOP TOUCHING MY TANK!!).

Hydroplaning Dolphins Fish In Shallow Water

Posted on Friday, April 1st, 2011 at 12:00 pm

In western Australia, dolphins face an interesting challenge. The fish they feed on, have resorted to hiding in extremely shallow water. “Tail slapping,” a method dolphins use to stun their pray, does not work in this case, so they have implemented a new technique. They build up speed, and then they hydroplane literally onto the beach. This great video from the BBC captures dolphins exhibiting this behavior.

The dolphins are able to use the shoreline as a barrier, while directing their pray closer and closer, until it has no more space to hide. It’s extremely interesting to see that the younger dolphins watch and learn how to hydroplane from their mothers. It’s important to note that due to mating habits, it’s extremely unlikely that this behavior is genetic in nature.
