Hawaii’s Diamond Head reef exposed after Tsunami

Posted on Friday, March 11th, 2011 at 9:40 am by

The famous Diamond Head reef in Hawaii has been exposed as the initial effects of the tsunami are being felt. The cause of the tsunami was a massive earthquake (8.9) off the coast of Japan. The water has moved over 100 feet inland with waves of up to 12 feet! The surges are hitting the island with about 15 minute intervals in most places, although some areas are reporting even longer intervals. The surges range from several inches to more serious ones. Sewage and debris is being spread constantly, and the cleaning efforts will have their hands full.

A spokesman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, Gerard Fryer, told Hawaii News that it seems as if the extent of the damage will be minor, although he went on to say that there “has definitely been no ‘all clear’ sounded.”
