Cretan Tools Discovery Suggests Sea Travel Existed 130,000 Years Ago
Posted on Tuesday, January 4th, 2011 at 12:05 pm by ReefToolsAccording to an article by the AP, a recent discovery on the Island of Crete, may bring forth evidence that humans traveled from the mainland to the island via the sea. It was believed previously, that humans migrated from Europe to Africa by land alone, but this may proved wrong shortly.
The Greek Culture Ministry said that “The results of the survey not only provide evidence of sea voyages in the Mediterranean tens of thousands of years earlier than we were aware of so far, but also change our understanding of early hominids’ cognitive abilities.”
The Cretan tools were found during cave surveys conducted by archaeologists from the American School of Classical Studies (Athens) and the Culture Ministry. A more complete excavation of the area is currently pendingĀ approvalĀ from the Greek authorities.
