HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps are Metal Halide bulbs that are comparable to many of the commonly available HQI lamps in the reefkeeping hobby. Aquatic Life has chosen to use these single-ended G12 base 150 watt bulbs due to the fact that they can be installed in both a horizontal and vertical position. This, Aquatic Life says, provides much more versatility when it comes to fixture design and implementation. This flexibility allows Aquatic Life to offer reflectors that better direct the light, and having less light “spill” outside of the tank. - The G12-based lamps are very common overseas; European and Japanese companies have used the lamps for years. Since our fixtures incorporate ANSI Standard M81 ballasts, they are compatible with other manufacturer’s lamps.

The IceCap Reef Illuminations line is the latest and greatest from IceCap Inc. The IceCap Reef Illuminations line offers combinations of MH/T5/LED or T5HO/LED. The addition of actinic LED to the IceCap Reef Illuminations fixtures, seems to convey an understanding by IceCap Inc. of just how important aquarium appearance is, to today’s hobbyist. Although these LED lamps are unlikely to provide much in the form of added PAR, they should assist greatly in making corals pop. This might allow hobbyists to use lower K metal halide bulbs and still achieve the overall color temp they desire. We’re looking forward to getting our hands on one of the IceCap Reef Illuminations fixtures and checking it out.

The high-intensity LED lighting used by JBJ in this nano tank, offers increased PAR while using less energy. The new canopy offers a complete 24 hour light cycle with:

Efficiency
Sick of buying new bulbs? How about once every 10 years!! The 89 watt LED system in this 28g Nano Cube outputs PAR comparable to that of the 150W HQI – 14K model, while consuming approximately 40% less energy. LEDs radiate heat upwards, rather then downwards, and therefore reduce heat transfer and the all-to-common need for a chiller. To ensure cool running (Not the movie!) JBJ employed an aluminum heat sink, which quickly dissipates the heat put out by the LEDs. 4 cooling fans are turned on in unison with the lighting, and a thermal protector has been added with an auto shut off feature, in case the fans fail.
Filtration
A common modification of the all-in-one nano tanks is the implementation of a refugium. JBJ makes everything easy as pie by providing a dedicated chamber for macro algae, alongside the activated carbon and sponge. The sponge helps prevent the algae from reaching and clogging the return pump.
Flow
The redesigned Ocean Pulse Duo now uses a memory chip to ensure consistent performance, even after a power failure. The Ocean Pulse Duo provides variable flow. Increments can be set anywhere between 10 seconds to 6 minutes in alternating cycles.
