Yesterday my co-worker Bill noticed an extraordinarily long, but thin, shrimp leg darting in and out of a series of holes that appeared to be drilled through the top of the rock. He chiseled open the rock and found this pistol shrimp. The pistol shrimp had to have been trapped inside the rock unable to leave since it was very young, similar to the way a gall crab grows inside a coral. If anyone recognizes this pistol shrimp and can identify it, please leave a comment.

LSS Labratory in Japan has been receiving reports that EcoSmart Drivers mounted close to the tank were being damaged during maintenance. You all know the “oh crap I forgot my hands were wet” syndrome. You’re doing something in the tank, you think to yourself, let me turn down the flow, and sure enough you get the EcoSmart wet. Or you casually remove your hands from the tank dripping over the VorTech driver.

In addition to these regular reports, the recent earthquake resulted in a wave of damaged systems. Any electrical component mounted near the tank, was likely to be effected by water splashing out of the tank. A need arose for a protective cover for the EcoSmart Driver.

LSS Labratory responded to this need by developing a beautiful and sleek drip-proof cover for the EcoTech EcoSmart Driver. Like an iPhone case, the new cover offers great protection while allowing the hobbyist access to all the control features. While not 100% water proof, the new cover should protect your EcoSmart from damage caused during regular maintenance or the occasional earthquake.

We’ve all seen several LED systems simulation lightning over reef tanks, but this HP Aquaristik system is just so much better. Designed with the goal of replicating nature, this system simulates cloud cover with LEDs which are individually controlled and dimmed. Rather than providing a fixed intensity throughout the ON period of the lighting cycle, this system outputs varied degrees of power over the different zones.

Next comes a true thunderstorm! The thunderstorm program includes LED lightning flashes, which increase in intensity as the storm develops. The last, and definitely coolest, part, is a 2 minute rain shower. An integrated tube system drips rain drops on the entire system, providing not just an amazing visual effect, but also serving as a partial auto top off.

The whole cycle lasts 8 minutes, with the last 2 minutes featuring rain. Here is a nice video showcasing the system.

Ecoxotic just keeps it coming. A few days ago, the company dedicated to “endangering the status quo” came out with 5 outstanding new color spectrums of Stunner LED strips. The extremely versatile line of Stunner LED strips is now available in:

452nm Actinic Blue
8000K White/453nm Blue
8000K White
403nm UV
Magenta
12000K White/Magenta
445nm Royal Blue
445nm Royal Blue/12000K White
453nm Blue/Magenta

From Ecoxotic: “Our customers love the versatility, linkable design and instant shimmer & coloring effects,” said Dennis Fredricks, president of Ecoxotic. “It’s all about having fun and with five new color spectrums, we’ve made the one minute LED upgrade an even better lighting solution for aquarists at all levels.”

The completely water-resistant, low voltage Stunner LED Strips, consume only 6 watts of power. Hobbyists are now able to very easily achieve their desired color spectrum by mixing and matching up to 10 6-watt Stunner LED Strips on each 60 watt driver. That’s absolutely beautiful. Similarly to T5 bulbs, you can now make slight adjustments by simply replacing one strip, until you are completely happy with the results. UNLIKE T5 bulbs, you will not need to replace these every 6-12 months.

We are very excited to see more and more applications using these versatile and modular LED strips. Check them out on the Ecoxotic website.

Skimz has released their new protein skimmer, the Leopard. A very exciting feature, unique to the Leopard protein skimmer, is the Integrated Inverted Cone (IIC). This new feature is intended to channel bubbles to the outer ring of the reaction chamber. The idea here is to reduce turbulence within the reaction chamber, and therefore achieve improved and more consistent skimming. Skimz says that together with a bubble plate, this design promotes maximum air flow capacity in compact skimmers.

The new line of Leopard protein skimmers are powered by a new Askoll LS skimmer pumps. This extremely quiet pump, pulls in a ton of air, and has an adjustable intake to suite different applications. Here are flow rates for the SL skimmer pumps:

SL200 – 1,600 l/h air – for aquarium up to 2,500 L
SL250 – 2,100 l/h air – for aquarium up to 3,500 L
SL300 – 4,200 l/h air – for aquarium up to 5,000 L

Last month we reported a Bladefin Basslet being sold for $9,999. Many reader have asked if we could get them a closer look at this fish. Well, here is a beautiful video of the Bladefin Basslet,Jeboehlkia gladifer, from Blue Harbor, the famous Osaka, Japan shop. As we mentioned, this fish is found at a depth of over 500 feet, and therefore is extremely rare in the hobby. This may actually not be due to the fact that it a “rare fish” per se, but rather, due to the fact that collecting this fish is extraordinarily difficult.

Let us know what you think.

We wanted to share TheBlackReef’s video of a 90 Gallon reef tank which has been running two Ecoxotic Panorama LEDs for over a year. TheBlackReef is reporting that the corals are doing great, and that the color from the unit is incredible. In addition to the impressive color and intensity, TheBlackReef is now using a lot less electricity, and is very happy about the fact that the Panorama LED Modules produce A LOT less heat the Metal Halides used before.

After checking out the videos below, get some more details about the Panorama LED Fixtures on the Ecoxotic website.

Here is the video posted last month:

Recently, two T5 actinic bulbs were added for more power over the tank.

Here is another video from TheBlackReef posted back in July of 2010, 7 months after the LED installation:
